What Are The Different Types of Braces?

Individuals with dental issues including misaligned or improperly formed teeth are more open nowadays to wearing braces for dealing with such abnormalities. It is estimated that nearly 4 million persons in the US have put on braces at some point in their lives. Previously, individuals had limited options when it came to wearing dental brackets or support. These days, Singaporeans have the option of  sporting braces that are almost invisible, for instance, clear braces that can be found at our dedicated Invisalign dental clinic in Singapore

Till the early nineties of the last cent, braces were primarily made of metals, ivory, stainless steel, gold, silver, copper, and other materials. However, with the passage of time, novel variations of these dental supports have evolved that are not only easier to install but require less maintenance as well. Basically, there are four distinct categories of braces that are available today:

  • Traditional brackets made of metal
  • Ceramic braces
  • Lingual braces
  • Clear Braces like Invisalign

Our dental clinic in Singapore is well-equipped to implant all the aforementioned types of orthodontic support.

Traditional or conventional metallic braces

From the earliest teeth supports constructed out of copper, gold, and silver, metallic brackets have come a long way. These days, you’ll come across supports that are made of highly pliable stainless steel wires that can be wounded around your teeth more conveniently causing you less pain. You’ll be able to open and close your jaws more comfortably.

You also have the option of going for self-ligation supports that come without o-rings and are easier to install. Stainless steel braces are also the least expensive amongst all kinds of supports. The downsides of these braces are that they’re visible, and also prevent you from consuming sticky or solid foods.

Ceramic / Porcelain Braces

Ceramic or Porcelain braces are favored over metal ones because their original texture and color closely resemble that of the human teeth. Hence, putting on ceramic or porcelain braces would give the impression that you’re not wearing anything at all. Tooth-colored bands or clear wires are also used together with porcelain braces to maintain that illusion as well. However, porcelain braces are more costly than metallic ones and subject to stains.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are similar to metallic or stainless steel braces in that these use identical metal brackets as well as bands and wires. The striking aspect that differentiates lingual supports from the traditional ones is that the lingual braces are fixed on the back side of teeth for concealment.

Nevertheless, there are some shortcomings associated with these kinds of braces. For instance, these are quite difficult to clean, more uncomfortable to wear, need to be adjusted periodically, ineffective for acute cases, and certainly more expensive than ceramic or metallic braces.
