Teeth undergo wear and tear just like any other part of the body. They get chipped, broken, or cracked, or they become stained or otherwise damaged. A good dentist will always try to save your original tooth rather than extracting it; but sometimes the tooth just doesn’t look good any more. In that case, veneers might be your best option for an attractive smile makeover.
Fact #1: Veneers cover your teeth.
As the name implies, veneers are simply thin shells that cover your teeth. They act almost as a front cover, covering up any chips, cracks, stains, or imperfections to give you a beautiful smile. When properly made, veneers are barely discernible from natural teeth.
Fact #2: There are two kinds of veneers.
The two basic types of veneers are porcelain veneers and composite veneers. Composite veneers are made of composite resin. They are applied directly to the tooth in layers and then sculpted and shaped while in the mouth. Composite veneers can help even out crooked teeth or fill in chipped areas. They can also be removed if necessary.
Porcelain veneers are a more permanent and durable solution. They are made in a lab and then cemented to the tooth. Applying porcelain veneers requires the removal of some of the tooth’s enamel, so the process isn’t reversible. Dentists usually choose this method when the tooth is severely chipped, malformed, or misaligned.
Fact #3: Veneers should not be placed on healthy teeth.
Before veneers can be placed on your teeth, your Singapore dentist has to remove enamel, or up to 30 percent of the tooth’s surface. It’s a step that cannot be reversed. Even if you choose composite veneers and take them off years later, the teeth may not look good enough after years of veneers. That’s why you should always opt for less invasive methods. Instead of using veneers, have your teeth straightened with Invisalign and use teeth whitening to improve their appearance.
Fact #4: Veneers are ideal for damaged teeth.
If you have suffered a fall, a car wreck, a sports injury, or some other kind of accident, you may have several broken, chipped, or cracked teeth. In this case, veneers are an excellent option for you. Thanks to modern technology and porcelain veneers, you can enjoy a whole, healthy smile again.
Fact #5: Veneers need the same care as natural teeth.
Veneers need to be cleaned and cared for just like ordinary teeth. You’ll need to brush them and floss them as directed by your dentist. If you notice any sensitivity or other issues, make an appointment for a cleaning and discuss those symptoms with your dentist.
Fact #6: Your veneers may feel odd at first.
When you have your veneers installed, your mouth may feel strange at first. The veneers add bulk to your teeth, but only a very slight amount. Still, you’ll likely notice the change. Your teeth may feel bigger and you may have to adjust to speaking and chewing like normal. Before long, however, you’ll get used to the veneers and you’ll be very comfortable with them.
