When you choose Invisalign for your smile makeover, there are a lot of wonderful benefits. However, it’s only right that you learn everything about this treatment method, including the more difficult or inconvenient aspects of the system. Check out our list of hard facts about Invisalign— things you should be prepared for as you begin your treatment.
1. Invisalign is not for everyone.
Thanks to Invisalign, dentists in Singapore can treat a variety of issues. Invisalign can close gaps, straighten crooked or tilted teeth, reduce the effects of crowding, and correct minor to moderate bite problems. However, if you have a severe bite issue or other serious dental problems, your dentist may need to combine Invisalign with some other types of treatment in order to improve your oral health and achieve the result you want.
2. You’ll have to adjust to speaking differently.
When a new object like braces or an appliance is introduced into your mouth, it changes the dynamics of the way you speak. The Invisalign trays fit snugly over your teeth, changing the way the air flows through your mouth and the way your tongue moves. You’ll have to practice talking with the aligners in for a couple of days before you can get past the embarrassing phase and speak normally again.
3. You must wear your aligners.
There’s no way to avoid it— if you want the treatment to work, you must wear the aligners. Your Invisalign provider in Singapore will likely recommend wearing your aligners 22 hours each day, which leaves only 2 hours for all three meals and any snacks, sports, or music practice. However, if you need to, you can wear them for 20 hours a day and gives yourself a little extra wiggle room. Remember that if you don’t keep the trays in for 20-22 hours daily, you won’t see enough change in your smile, and your treatment will take much longer.
4. The aligners can be stained.
You’ll need to be careful about beverages that can stain your aligners. No more sipping on coffee throughout the morning, or savouring a glass of red wine in the evening. You’ll have to take your trays out for these deeply coloured drinks, which can severely stain your aligners and ruin their clear, invisible effect. If you do indulge in drinks with intense colour, make sure you budget some aligner-free time for them, and brush thoroughly afterwards before putting your aligners back in.
5. Weight loss can be expected
This may be a blessing in disguise for some people where they struggle with cravings and snacking throughout the day. With Invisalign aligners on, nibbling on snacks become much less convenient as you would have to take them off and then brush your teeth and the aligners again after, before putting them back on. Most people find that going through all that trouble is just not worth it and over time their senseless snacking habits may eventually change.
6. The process might take longer than expected.
Your dentist in Singapore will let you know an approximate length of treatment, such as 9 months, 12 months, or 18 months, depending on the severity of your dental issues. However, even if you wear your aligners 20-22 hours a day, it might take a little longer to finish out your treatment. This is because some patients need a final set of aligners just to tweak a few things to get their exact desired smile. It may only take a few more weeks, so it’s worth the extra time to get the smile you’ve dreamed of all this time.
7. It’s worth the effort, time, and money.
Invisalign isn’t just for improving your looks, although that is a wonderful benefit. It’s also important for correcting problems that are affecting your oral health, such as gaps and bite issues. When you finally finish Invisalign, you’ll be so thrilled with your clean, straight teeth and your comfortable bite that you’d be willing to do it all again.
