According to a 2013 case report published by Contemporary Clinical Dentistry, porcelain veneers are an effective way to enhance the appearance of discoloured teeth. The dentists involved in the case reported an excellent result for their young patient. Find out how they repaired the problematic teeth and gave the patient a beautiful smile.
Porcelain veneers now have a tried-and-true history of success for patients with a wide range of dental problems. Often, they are used to restore pitted, broken, chipped, or otherwise damaged teeth. In the 2013 case, the patient was a young woman, aged 21 years, who experienced severe staining on several of her front teeth.
When the young woman came in for an examination, the dentist discovered that her front top teeth were severely stained in multiple places. After the examination and a conversation with the patient, the dentist identified the cause of the problem as the result of fluorosis staining. The young woman had no other complicating factors, so the team decided to use porcelain veneers to correct the problem.
First, the teeth had to be cut and contoured in preparation for the veneers. Next, the dental team took impressions of the prepped teeth using polyvinyl siloxane, or the Putty-Wash technique. The team also made a working model of the patient’s teeth so that they could test the veneers once they were created.
After the porcelain veneers were customised and tested, the team cleaned the patient’s teeth and prepped the surfaces for the adhesive. The veneer application involved several steps to ensure that everything was secure and perfectly aligned. The result was an amazing difference— beautiful, straight, white teeth that gave the young patient the smile makeover she wanted.
As with any big dental procedure, follow-up visits were necessary to ensure the success of the veneers. In this case, the patient had to be reminded to floss more often; but otherwise, her porcelain veneers remained perfectly beautiful for years after their installation.
Porcelain Veneers for Young People
For young people who need treatment for aesthetic reasons, porcelain veneers can be an ideal option, especially since the teeth of young adults are generally ideally structured for the process. Younger teeth do not need to be reduced as deeply as older teeth, therefore more of the tooth structure can be preserved. In addition, porcelain veneers do not require as much reduction of the tooth as full crowns do, even though your dentist in Singapore will have to shave off some of the enamel during the preparation process. The veneers can be perfectly colour-matched and customised to mimic the natural look of the original teeth.
