For years, dentists in Singapore and dental professionals have been aware of the fact that fixed orthodontic appliances (FOA), such as braces and retainers, cause a temporary interference with the dental health of the patients who prescribe to FOA as a treatment plan. This is one of the reasons that the usage of Invisalign aligners in Singapore as a substitute treatment plan for FOA has increased so much so over the course of the last decade.
Yet for all their increase of usage, there is little literature that details the periodontal effects of using Invisalign aligners. We know that using fixed orthodontic appliances creates in patients the increased likelihood of an accumulation of bacterial plaque. This is a direct result of the fact FOA decreases a patient’s ability to properly perform good oral hygiene. The fact that so much information existed regarding the periodontal effects of FOA, while so little information existed regarding the periodontal effects of Invisalign aligners, prompted a group of colleagues to investigate just that. A. Azaripour, J. Weusmann, B. Mahmoodi, D. Peppas, A. GerholdAy, C. J. F. Van Noodren, and B. Willershausen dove into the examination of the effects Invisalign aligners, as a treatment plan, has upon the dental hygiene of the patients’ mouths. The results spoke volumes about the benefits of using aligners.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study was to investigate and examine how Invisalign technology as a treatment plan affected patients’ oral hygiene, and overall oral health. As well as gauging the patients’ oral health, this study also sought to discern whether patients were more satisfied with Traditional metal braces or Invisalign aligner treatment.
Methods of Study
This study involved one hundred individual patients who had undergone orthodontic treatment for more than six months. Fifty of the patients had used FOA as a form of orthodontic treatment; the other fifty patients had used Invisalign as their form of treatment. Prior to treatment, clinical dental examinations were performed, in order to observe the patient’s health before introducing the aligners or the FOA, respectively. After treatment had concluded, clinical dental examinations were again performed, in order that dental health before and after treatment could be properly compared. Patients were also asked to fill out a questionnaire that included inquisitions about their oral hygiene, dietary habits, and overall satisfaction.
Results and Conclusions
Not only did the study reveal that Invisalign patients experienced better gingival health conditions than did their FOA counterparts, but the questionnaire revealed that patients who used Invisalign were far more satisfied than were patients who used FOA. The conclusion stands strong and clear: The usage of Invisalign results in better dental health and leads to greater patient satisfaction as compared to fixed orthodontic appliances.
