One of the concerns some people have when using Invisalign in Singapore is how to keep their teeth clean while using them. While some effort is required to ensure proper oral hygiene, you’ll find that the process is much easier than with traditional braces. Perhaps you have known people that had had traditional metal braces and had issues with cleaning their teeth, keeping them clean and odor-free or the dreaded stain line that can form if the teeth aren’t cared for properly. Some of these hygiene issues can even lead to the removal of metal braces, delaying the treatment!
Thankfully, you will find that Invisalign will be a lot more forgiving when it comes to caring for your teeth. Below are some tips on how to keep your teeth as clean as possible.
Eating and Drinking
There are a few things that should be taken into account regarding eating and drinking to keep your teeth clean and sparkling. If you are using Invisalign, you should be taking out your aligners during meals. Although sometimes we get clients to wear them even when eating in order to habituate them into wearing them often. As a result, the food itself shouldn’t cause any issues any more than for anyone else. Care should be taken to drink plenty of water during meals as well. When the aligners are in your mouth, you can drink, but be sure to drink clear liquids such as water. Darker drinks, such as coffee, tea and red wine can cause staining, not just to the aligners, but to the teeth as well.
This will play the major role in keeping your teeth clean. While many people are fine with brushing once or twice a day, you will find that there will be a greater need to keep up your oral hygiene with Invisalign. The recommendation is to brush and floss in the morning before you go to bed as well as after each meal. Mouthwash is also recommended. In addition, cleaning out the aligners themselves with specialized cleaner or even just a mild soap will also help to keep your teeth clean. This helps by making sure that the plastic itself is clean but also so that any stain-causing compounds are not given a home just on the surface of your clean teeth.
Care should be given, however, to the type of chemicals and instruments used to clean the aligners. Use only a soft bristled brush as stiff bristles or other devices could end up scratching the plastic and cause undue attention to the teeth.
Proper Hygiene Pays Off
Although there is certainly extra work added when trying to maintain clean teeth using Invisalign, you will find that not only does this extra care pay off, but they this will also help you have good oral hygiene even after you no longer need the aligners.
