What restrictions are in place for Invisalign wearers? Can a person play water sports, contact sports, or wind instruments while undergoing Invisalign treatment? Find out how permissive the Invisalign system can be for patients.

Restrictions of Traditional Braces

With traditional braces, wearers are often restricted from certain activities. There are specific foods, like whole apples and popcorn, that are on the blacklist and should not be eaten by people with braces. In addition, there are a number of contact sports that people with braces should not play. A blow to the mouth during a rough game could cause the lips to be smashed into the metal braces, causing severe injuries. Generally, people who play wind instruments cannot play them anymore once they have their braces put on.

The Invisalign Difference

With Invisalign, there are very few restrictions, since the clear aligners can be popped out and safely set aside, then re-inserted later. The biggest restriction applies to substances that could stain the aligners, such as drinking coffee or other strongly coloured beverages while wearing the trays. Smoking is also discouraged. However, other than those minimal recommendations, everything else is permitted.

Water Sports

If you’re involved in water sports, such as water aerobics, long-distance swimming, and other activities, you can leave your aligners in. The trays fit very snugly, so they should not slip out and get lost. Plus, even if there is chlorine in the water, it should not affect the durability of the trays as long as you rinse them afterwards.

A more dramatic activity, such as water-skiing, could potentially result in a mouthful of water that might have enough force to knock out the trays. In that case, you might choke on them or lose them. If you’re planning an activity like that, leave the aligners safely tucking in a hard-sided case for protection.

Contact Sports

If you play a rough team sport where you may get hit in the mouth, talk to your dentist in Singapore about whether you should leave your trays in or take them out during practice and games. Consider wearing a mouth guard to protect your investment in your teeth.

Hard or Gummy Foods

Since you can remove your Invisalign trays to eat, there are no restrictions on the types of food you can enjoy. Just be sure to store your aligners in a safe place in the interim. Brush and floss your teeth thoroughly before you pop the trays back in after the meal.

Wind Instruments

You can take your Invisalign aligners out to practice a wind instrument. If you have a performance, you’ll want to remove the trays for that as well and put them back in immediately afterward.

Heat

Heat can affect your Invisalign trays. Avoid leaving them in your car on a hot day, or letting them sit in the sun. The heat could warp them so that they are no longer the correct shape for your teeth. If you think your trays may have been affected by heat, bring them to your dentist in Singapore for examination.

Remember, if you regularly leave your Invisalign trays out, you could extend the length of your treatment timetable. At Orchard Scotts Dental, we recommend that our Invisalign patients wear their aligners for 22 hours each day, taking them out only for meals. However, we understand that there are sometimes exceptions to the rule. As long as you limit those exceptions, your treatment can continue on schedule.
