A 2013 study prepared by Aldo Giancotti and Gianluca Mampieri reveals that Invisalign has applications that extend beyond cosmetic dentistry. In fact, Invisalign can be instrumental during restorative dental treatments. Using the clear aligners can actually simplify the process, enabling quicker and more efficient dental restoration.

The Men Behind the Study

The study was conducted under the auspices of the Department of Orthodontics at Fatebenefratelli Hospital, in association with the University of Rome in Italy. Gianluca Mampieri conducted the treatments himself, using the cases of a 41-year-old man, a 34-year-old man, and a 37-year-old woman to show the benefits of advance treatment with Invisalign before the full restorative treatment.

Invisalign as a Restorative Solution

The first patient had a missing molar, contact issues, and an open bite or malocclusion. Before his orthodontist proceed to install an implant for the missing tooth, he had the patient wear Invisalign aligners for a while. Every 4-6 weeks, the patient came in to have the aligner checked or swapped for a new one. Since the patient was diligent in wearing the aligners, they did their work quickly, correcting the angles of various teeth, correcting the open bite, and lining everything up neatly. Using the aligners also enabled the orthodontist to gain enough space to install the new molar implant. After the treatment, the man’s smile was crisply aligned, with no gaps and a comfortable bite.

The second patient in the study also had a malocclusion, along with a missing molar. Because of the gap in her teeth, another one of her molars had tilted. Her top and bottom teeth were somewhat crowded as well. With the regular use of Invisalign, her upper arch was expanded to reduce the crowding. The aligners also corrected the incline of various teeth and made space for the new implant. The third patient’s issues of a deep bite, missing teeth, and a crooked smile were also corrected with the use of invisalign.

Invisalign as an Alternative to Appliances and Braces

All of these patients recognised their need for new smiles, but none of them wanted to wear an appliance. Invisalign was the ideal alternative, providing the necessary change without inconveniencing the patients or causing them embarrassment in everyday life. They were able to correct their teeth without sporting a lot of hardware in their mouths. Though the aligners themselves were nearly invisible, the positive changes in the patients’ smiles were dramatic and wonderful.

Invisalign at Orchard Scotts Dental

At Orchard Scotts Dental, a trusted dental clinic in Singapore that specialises in Invisalign treatment, we have long recognised the potential for Invisalign to partner with other technologies. Sometimes we use Invisalign as a standalone treatment to correct a smile, and sometimes we use it along with other top dental technologies and systems. Dental implants, whitening processes, and porcelain veneers often look better after the patient has undergone treatment with Invisalign first.

Invisalign corrects some of the underlying issues with the arrangement and angle of the teeth, and then the veneers or implants fill in any gaps and create white, even teeth. It’s all part of the total smile makeover package that we offer as one of the dental clinics in Singapore with the best dentists in Singapore you can trust!
