Often, people with stained or discoloured teeth may need a whitening procedure to restore their smile. If you are not happy with your smile, tooth whitening may provide the solution.
If you have stained or discoloured teeth, a simple polishing may be able to fix this. However, if the stains are unusually dark, then whitening procedures like White Glow! can provide you with the whitened tone you’ve always wanted.
What can tooth whitening do?
Tooth whitening is a process by which activated oxygen is placed in contact with the teeth, which will gently remove the stains that are within the tooth or teeth.
What causes yellowing of teeth?
There are many causes of yellowing teeth, and even ageing will cause yellowing of the teeth. Other common reasons include staining substances (e.g. coffee, tea, cola and tobacco), fillings and nerve degeneration. Excessive fluoride and consumption of certain antibiotics also cause staining during tooth formation.
There are generally three options:
At Home Whitening is the preferred choice if you want slightly lighter teeth. Whitening Gel is placed on fitted trays and is applied over the teeth. These trays are typically worn for half an hour a day for two weeks.
For those with higher expectations, we recommend in-office Whitening as this will form a brighter smile. We use the Innowhite Whitening System. It involves applying a protective rubber gel to your gums. A whitening gel is then applied to the teeth, and a special light is used to intensify the chemical action which results in teeth that are less stained
Deep Whitening is also available, and it essentially combines one session of in-office whitening and at home care. This method will ensure that your teeth are as white as they can be.
Some patients may develop temporary teeth sensitivity after treatment. These symptoms will generally disappear within 1 to 3 days after the completion of treatment.
The teeth will always be less stained than they were before whitening. However, some patients may need periodic re-whitening every two to three years if they continue with staining substances like caffeine or tobacco products.
If you’re interested in brightening your smile then consider having your teeth evaluated by us. As not everyone is a good candidate for whitening, we always offer additional solutions. These can include veneers, crowns and bridges that have been colour-matched to your existing teeth tone.
