Cost Comparison: Porcelain vs Composite Veneers

Dr. Kenneth Goh

Porcelain veneers cost $1,000–$2,500 per tooth in Singapore; composite $400–$1,300. But the real comparison is cost per year — and what you're paying for behind the price.

The cost of dental veneers is usually the first question patients ask — and the last thing that should drive the decision. Not because cost does not matter, but because the number on the quote means very little without understanding what it includes, how long the result will last, and what corners were cut (or not) to arrive at that price.

This guide breaks down the real cost comparison between porcelain and composite veneers in Singapore — not just the sticker price, but what you are actually paying for.

The headline numbers

In Singapore, the typical price ranges are:

Porcelain Veneers Composite Veneers
Cost per tooth $1,000 – $2,500 $400 – $1,300
Lifespan 15 – 25 years 5 – 7 years
Cost per year Based on mid-range pricing ~$88/year $1,750 over 20 years ~$142/year $850 over 6 years
Appointments 2 – 3 visits over 2 weeks Single visit
Stain resistance Highly resistant Moderate — stains over time
Translucency Mimics natural enamel More opaque
Enamel removal 0.3 – 0.5mm (irreversible) Minimal or none
Repairability Full replacement if damaged Chairside repair possible
Best for Long-term investment, full smile transformations Budget-conscious, single-tooth fixes, trial before porcelain

These ranges are wide because veneer pricing is not standardised. Two clinics quoting $1,800 for a porcelain veneer may be offering fundamentally different levels of material, process, and expertise. The number alone tells you almost nothing.

What you are actually paying for

The cost of a veneer covers four distinct elements. Understanding each one explains why prices vary — and why the cheapest option is rarely the most economical.

1. The clinical process

A veneer is only as good as the preparation that precedes it. At the lower end of the price range, the process may involve a brief consultation, a quick impression, and standard preparation. At the higher end, it includes a comprehensive smile analysis — facial proportions, gum symmetry, bite assessment, digital photography — followed by a detailed treatment plan before any tooth is touched.

This diagnostic investment takes time. Time costs money. But it is the single biggest determinant of whether the final result looks natural and lasts.

2. The ceramist

For porcelain veneers, the ceramist — the person who hand-builds each veneer — is arguably as important as the dentist. A skilled ceramist controls the colour gradient from gum line to edge, the translucency that makes porcelain read as natural enamel, and the surface texture that catches light correctly.

Practices with an in-house ceramist have a significant advantage: the dentist and ceramist collaborate directly, adjusting shade and form with the patient present. This level of coordination is reflected in the price — and in the result. When the ceramist is in an external laboratory, the communication happens through written prescriptions and photographs, which inevitably lose nuance.

3. The material

Not all porcelain is the same. Higher-grade ceramics with better translucency and strength cost more to source and are more difficult to work with. The difference is visible — particularly in the way the veneer handles light, which is what makes the distinction between a veneer that looks like a tooth and one that looks like a piece of porcelain sitting on a tooth.

Composite resin is less expensive as a material, but the quality of composite also varies. Premium composites offer better colour stability and polishability than budget alternatives.

4. The dentist's experience

Veneers are among the most technique-sensitive procedures in cosmetic dentistry. The margin between a natural-looking result and an artificial one is measured in fractions of a millimetre. A dentist who has placed thousands of veneers over many years brings pattern recognition that directly affects the quality and longevity of the outcome.

Higher fees from experienced dentists reflect this accumulated expertise — not just a premium for credentials on a wall.

The number that actually matters: cost per year

This is the comparison most patients overlook, and it changes the calculation entirely.

Porcelain veneers last 15 to 25 years with proper care. Composite veneers last 5 to 7 years. Run the maths:

  • Porcelain at $1,800 per tooth, lasting 20 years = $90 per year
  • Composite at $600 per tooth, lasting 6 years = $100 per year

The cheaper option costs more per year of use — and that is before factoring in the cost, inconvenience, and additional enamel loss of replacing composite veneers two or three times within the same period that a single set of porcelain would still be functioning.

For patients who are confident in their decision and want a long-term result, porcelain is typically the more cost-effective choice over time. For patients who want to test the aesthetic change before committing, or who need a shorter-term solution, composite offers a lower entry point with the option to upgrade later.

Additional costs to factor in

The veneer itself is not always the full picture. Depending on your situation, additional procedures may be recommended:

  • Gum reshaping — If your gum line is uneven, gum contouring may be needed to create a balanced frame for the veneers
  • Teeth whitening — Natural teeth adjacent to the veneers may need whitening to ensure a uniform colour match
  • Orthodontic pre-treatment — If teeth are significantly misaligned, Invisalign or braces may be recommended before veneer placement to ensure the veneers are built on a stable, well-positioned foundation

These are not upsells — they are clinical decisions that affect the quality and longevity of the result. A dentist who recommends additional preparation is usually protecting the investment, not inflating the bill.

Insurance and financing

Most dental insurance plans in Singapore classify veneers as cosmetic and do not cover them. If veneers are part of a treatment plan addressing structural damage or oral health issues, partial coverage may be available — check with your provider.

Many clinics offer instalment plans or financing options to make the investment more manageable. At Orchard Scotts Dental, we can discuss payment arrangements during your consultation.

How to evaluate a veneer quote

When comparing quotes from different clinics, ask:

  • What is included? Does the quote cover the full process — consultation, smile design, preparation, fabrication, bonding, and follow-up — or just the veneer placement?
  • Who makes the veneers? Is there an in-house ceramist, or are the veneers outsourced to an external laboratory?
  • What material grade? Not all porcelain is equivalent — ask about the specific ceramic system being used
  • What is the dentist's case volume? How many veneers has the dentist placed, and over how many years?
  • What is the expected lifespan? A clinic confident in their work should be able to discuss realistic longevity expectations

The lowest quote is not necessarily the worst option, and the highest is not necessarily the best. But the questions above will reveal what is behind the number — and that is where the real comparison lives.
